PilatesAn exercise strategy that burst on the fitness scene in the ’90s, Pilates was the original model for the latest fitness craze in “core strengthening.” However, Pilates training does much more than strengthen the core, which is indeed one of its many benefits. It also offers:
- Articulating spinal movement
- Dynamic and static stretching
- Strengthening and lengthening of arm and leg muscles
- Improved postural awareness
- Specific emphasis on concentration, control and breath
Pilates exercise is often offered in a class format or on video for home exercisers. Both of these options use mat work which is mainly done on the floor using the resistance of your own body. Many exercises in the mat repertoire are quite difficult to do correctly, especially if you are not familiar with the Pilates concepts or if you are new to exercise in general.
Pilates training also makes use of the varied and unusual equipment originally developed by the method’s namesake, Joseph Pilates. With a repertoire of more than 500 exercises, each piece has a vast array of moves that can be modified to suit your specific needs. The exercises can be chosen to provide resistance and an advanced workout or to help with a move you may be struggling to conquer.
At Summit PT, we emphasize individual training on the equipment, especially when you are first learning the Pilates repertoire and the concepts behind the work. One-on-one sessions with our certified trainers or physical therapists will ensure you experience the true benefits of this training. As you progress, we also offer a semi-private mat class with only 4 clients at a time. This provides a unique opportunity to have close supervision in this challenging repertoire but still enjoy a class environment.
